The following three pages shows the evolution of day one of my lesson plan from week one of ITL 528 until week three. Included in the links below are the elements used to teach the first day of this five day lesson plan.
This page includes the Power Point for the opening lesson, graphic organizers for taking notes, and related details about how each part was applied to the lesson plan.

The Opening Power Point
This power point was created to go with the video, What is Theme - Cinderella Version. Unfortunately, in creating it, I learned Teacher Tube videos cannot be embedded and that made it so that the video itself needed to be turned into a Power Point.
At this point in the presentation, students are expected to start seeing patterns in how the characters' actions reveal the theme. Later in the Power Point, they will apply this strategy to the narrative, Cinderella.
From this point, students will begin reading and annotating Eleven by Sandra Cisneros. The idea is to practice the concept of theme on a narrative where the life lesson is common knowledge.
Previewing The Next Step
In the second step students will listen to Eleven and annotate as they read. In the end of this day of the lesson, they will apply what they learned through Cinderella. How does Cisneros feel about growing older?
What are the clues in her words?
What are the clues in her actions?

Some Graphic Organizers Used
The graphic organizers use include annotations, looking specifically about what the consequences of the characters' actions are, and zoning in on the narrative's big ideas. This will allow students to use the concepts they learned while breaking down the theme in Cinderella to new narratives, including more complex text where the theme is not quite as self-evident.
